Psychologists' Credentials

A license issued by the state is required to practice psychology. Only the holder of a current license has the privilege of using the title "psychologist" and of practicing psychology. In Pennsyvlania, the State Board of Psychology, located in Harrisburg, is charged with the administration of the psychology licensing law, (Professional Psychologists Practice Act). The Board recognizes various applied specialties within professional psychology. Statutory requirements for licensure, rules, and procedures, application forms, and other information may be obtained from the Board by calling 717-783-7155 or by visiting the website www.dos.state.pa.us.

The basic educational requirement for licensure is a doctoral degree in psychology. The doctoral degree may be earned at a graduate school or in a school of professional psychology. In most cases, graduate schools award the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), or Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), while professional schools award the degree of Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D).

Professional psychologists must also complete two (2) years (or 2000 hours) of supervised practice to be eligible for licensure. In most cases, the first year is usually a full-time internship completed in conjunction with the doctoral degree. During the internship, individuals receive supervised training by a licensed psychologist in diagnosing and treating patients with various disorders. The second year of supervised practice typically involves post-doctoral work at an approved site. The American Psychological Association accredits educational programs in professional psychology, internships, and postdoctoral residency programs. An updated listing of accredited programs and accreditional standards may be found by visiting the website www.apa.org/ed/accreditation. Once the individual has completed the required supervised training, the candidate must also pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) which leads to licensure. Hence, psychologists have 4-6 years of education and training after the bachelor's degree before they are allowed a license to practice independently. The standards of becoming a psychologist are quite stringent.

Specialty certification in psychology is recognized by the American Board of Professional Psychology. Visit this site at www.ABPP.org. ABPP certification indicates advanced competence in a specific area of professional psychology.
